Decorating Ideas For A Christmas Wedding

A wedding around Christmas time is one of the most fun to plan! With Christmas fast approaching, I thought it would be a good idea to amp up the festive mood with an article that shows you how to seamlessly incorporate Christmas decor ideas into your wedding, without going overboard.

Christmas Wedding – Decor Inspiration

Winter Wedding Invites

Planning a Christmas wedding? Set a festive tone by sending your guests an invitation around mid October or near Halloween that screams Christmas cheer! It's a surefire way to let them know they are in for a spectacular festive Christmas wedding to remember.

Look for invitations that have flecks of snow, snowflakes, Christmas wreaths, or candy cane string.

If you are stumped with where to start looking, try online shops like

  • Minted
  • Etsy
  • Zazzle
  • Purple Trail
  • Wedding Paperie

They offer some super cute invites similar to the one below.

Winter Wedding Attire

Wedding attire is important for each and every wedding. However, a traditional Christmas wedding limits you to certain color pallets as well as a more formal feel, making your attire selection a little bit easier.

Choose beautiful deep jewel red tones, rich golds, or emerald green … or add a bit more drama and have the bridesmaids in black dresses holding red bouquets. Unlike other seasons, you can break out your faux fur shawls, mittens, and wraps as an option at this time of year.

Footwear

Have fun with your footwear! Dorothy had it right: red heels are perfect for such an occasion. Be comfortable as you dance the night away in red flats.

And, let me remind you that outdoor winter photos call for a pair of fun colored Ugg boots!

Golden Pine Cones

Pine cones are a beautiful way to add some wintry decor to your venue. DIY a pile of pine cones by using gold spray paint (as pictured below) to add a bit of shimmer. Use pine cones within bridal bouquets and boutonnieres in order to tie an entire wedding theme together.

Alternatively, supply Pine cone fire starters as a festive wedding favor.

Touches of Wood

A woodsy rustic wedding in winter just wouldn't be complete without wood tea light holder or wood slice table numbers surrounded by green pine and red berries.

Can't Go Wrong With Plaid

A little bit of plaid has Christmas wedding written all over it! Use wire plaid ribbon in the center of your reception table and surround with bulbs, tea lights, and a beautiful floral arrangement of pine and holly.

Cranberries and Holly Everywhere

Create a fancy and festive cocktail for the reception using red cranberries.

Adding a sprig of holly to each place setting as well as the bridal bouquet adds a beautiful holiday touch. Loving the pop of red from this red table runner! Check out more festive table runners from Minted.

Snowflake Cake Toppers

Don't forget about dessert and the all important winter theme cake topper. Add a snowflake topper with your initials or top each cupcake with a snowflake on a toothpick. I can see this being a simple and quick DIY option!

We love these vintage set of snow men made out of book pages, and think they would be perfect to decorate a Christmas wedding reception dessert table.

Antler & Stag Wedding Decor

Antler and stag wedding decor seems to be a cyclical theme. Personally, I love this look for a winter time wedding. The back to nature look reminds me of time spent in ski chalets, lodges, and other wintry venues. I always enjoy a cold escape to a chalet where I can snuggle up close to a roaring indoor wood fire, and my hubby of course!

Add a rustic touch with antlers and sparkly stags to go with your forest green and ruby red color scheme.

Sweet Holiday Treats

Create a grand buffet of holiday treats: home-made Christmas dessert, meringue, candy canes, hot coco, and s'more wedding favors. I can think of no better time to host a grand affair like a wedding than at Christmas. After all, everyone's diet is out the window until the New Year anyhow, so might as well enjoy the festive bonanza of sweet treats!

Of course, the holiday season just wouldn't be complete without an obligatory mammoth sized bowl of red, green, and silver Hershey kisses! Personalize the bottom of each kiss with your initials and wedding date. Oh, and be sure to buy lots of extras because you wouldn't want to run out … and that way you can enjoy them after your wedding!

A Christmas Tree or Two

I think it goes without saying that a Christmas tree is a must-have at a Christmas time wedding. One tree provides an nice atmosphere, while two or more trees means you have yourself a full on Christmas wedding reception.

Decorate each tree with ornaments that match your style and color scheme to create a wonderland of holiday happiness. Go classy and elegant like the tree pictured below, or have some fun an add whimsical decorations. Perhaps both you and your fiance could add sentimental ornaments saved from childhood to the tree, or DIY an ornament to hang on a special branch.

Add Twinkling Lights

A personalized light up marquee creates a bespoke focal point that is both decorative and functional.

When shopping for my wedding decor, I used to love going to this one store near my apartment that always carried an eclectic mix of funky/industrial/urban stuff. A sign like the one below was a mainstay. Light up initials are great for the holiday season, and can be reused for years afterwards.
